‘The conventional wisdom about food and exercise over the past thirty years has been dead wrong.’

If you’re at all concerned with the rising rates of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes and if the fact that we’re the first generation predicted to live shorter life spans than our parents, this is a movie you can’t miss. Narrated by Katie Couric, Fed Up tells the story of how our changing food supplies have a direct and profound effect on our health, including our weight. It teaches us that the conventional idea on calories in vs calories burned is a failed system that doesn’t account for the difference in calories; 100 calories from a banana are absorbed by the body, stored and burned much differently than 100 calories from a candy bar or any other food loaded with processed sugar.

Fed Up follows the lives of several obese teens, as they continue to exercise and eat low fat processed foods and sugary diet sodas and, with tear filled pleas, wonder why they continue to gain weight.

Fed Up hopes to prove the direct correlation between sugar and our declining health.  It also opens your eyes to the deceptive marketing practices in effect and the power of the major food companies over our food supplies.

Once you see Fed Up and learn the the truth about sugar, we hope you get as Fed Up as we are with the state of our food environment. We are facing the biggest public health crisis of our time and the future of our nation depends on us taking action in our homes, schools, communities and workplaces.

I was so happy to see this film end with a call to action. Their call to action involves a challenge that will prove to be one of the hardest you’ve ever done. Give up sugar for 10 days.  If you’ve never tried to give up sugar, or think you’re not addicted to it, just try giving it up and you’ll realize how powerful and addicting sugar truly is.

One comment from Fed Up that I couldn’t get out of my head is that ‘soda is the cigarettes of the 21st century’. Meaning we are addicted to a product and controlled by a powerful organization that leverages it’s financial contributions to our government. And we need to take that control back.

I’ve written several times about the power of food, and it’s ability to transform our bodies, our health and our lives; in fact, it’s pretty much my motto around here. So it’s nice to see a study come out to back that up. In August 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest rates of adult obesity in the United States. 

As they state, the future health of the US is at a crossroads, due in large part to the obesity epidemic. Each year, the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) issue “F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future” to examine strategies for addressing the obesity crisis. In this ninth edition of the report, TFAH and RWJF also commissioned a new study to look at how obesity could impact the future health and wealth of our nation. 

In 2011: twelve states had an adult obesity rate above 30 percent. Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity at 34.9 percent, while Colorado had the lowest rate at 20.7 percent. Twenty-six of the 30 states with the highest obesity rates are in the midwest and south. All 10 of the states with the highest rates of type 2 diabetes and hypertension are in the south.

Trust for America’s Health is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority.  

As this year’s report details, we have seen important inroads made toward preventing and reducing obesity around the country, especially among children. We know that real changes are possible. But we also have found that efforts will need to be intensified if we are going to achieve a major reduction in obesity and related health problems.

So what are some of the eye opening results of the study?

First off, those who eat an abundance of fruits and veggies tend to be thinner than those who don’t.  In fact,  seven of the 10 states with the highest rates of obesity were in the bottom tier for fruit and vegetable consumption. So what does this mean for those who can’t find fresh fruits and veggies in their areas? In many cities lacking in fresh produce, commonly called food deserts, there are an abundance of fast food chains to replace what should be a fresh farmers market ideally.  So the people who live in these cities have a harder time finding local, fresh produce to eat, and therefore tend to turn to fast food joints. Perhaps it’s how they’re raised. Perhaps it’s the effect of media messaging (advertising is a powerful force). Perhaps its a matter of economics; as we know, fast food is probably the cheapest way to eat in America.

The states with the lowest fruit and veggie consumption are West Virginia (7.9 percent), Louisiana (8.2 percent), Oklahoma (9.8 percent) and Mississippi (10.3 percent). And you guessed it, they correlate with the fattest states in America. Mississippi has an obesity rate of 34.9 percent, followed by Louisiana at 33.4 percent, and West Virginia at 32.4 percent. Colorado holds on to its top spot for skinniest state. Only about 21 percent of Coloradans are obese, followed by Hawaii, with an obesity rate of 22 percent.

One of the more important aspects in my opinion is the research as it relates to children, and their rates of obesity.

Children and teens living in neighborhoods with more green space, such as parks, playing fields, trails and schoolyards, were less likely to be overweight than their counterparts in less-green neighborhoods.

Neighborhoods with high levels of poverty are significantly less likely to have places where children can be physically active, such as parks, green spaces and bike paths and lanes.

In general, states with the highest levels of bicycling and walk- ing have the lowest levels of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, and have the greatest percentage of adults who meet the recommended 30-plus minutes a day of physical activity.

Interesting study mentioned on The Today Show; yes, it seems I get a lot of my news updates from The Today Show 🙂

That said, I agree with the author and group which conducted the study that the results are counter-intuitive to what I would imagine, which is that Dad’s actually hold more “weight” as to whether your child turns out to be overweight or not. Surprising, no? Not to sound like a 1950’s girl here, but most moms that I know are the ones doing the food shopping and cooking dinner at night, and often times the ones coordinating sporting events and play dates as well. Though I must admit that I’m lucky enough to have a husband that pulls more than his fair share of weight around the kitchen and typically does most of the cooking, I know that’s not always the case. He also makes sure our son is in all the sporting groups possible, often times with only 1-2 weeks off from one sport before he’s registered for another, so I can say that I’m fortunate to have an athletic-minded role model for our son.

So, the article begs the question; who is doing the shopping, cooking, and influencing the activity levels in the average home? The Australian study referenced by the Today Show piece, and published in the current issue of the International Journal of Obesity, focused on 3,285 two-parent families in which only one parent was overweight or obese; the kids in the study were 8 or 9. Researchers found that heavy dads were more likely to have heavy sons and daughters, but heavy moms were no more likely than healthy-weight moms to have heavy children.

So what’s interesting here is that a heavy mom is less likely to encourage her children to be overweight (does she teach better eating and activity practices than she herself does perhaps?) however, a heavy dad is likely to pass along his eating and activity habits. How does a healthy-weight mom with an overweight husband ensure their children don’t take upon their fathers’ habits? How does she discourage their children from being overweight?

This is a tough one, because it seems a house divided by weight would be a hard topic to approach without upsetting your spouse, though obviously the health and wellness of your child is of the utmost importance. Perhaps focusing on a family walk together after dinner, or suggesting that your kids get involved in sports early on.  Remember though, an overweight husband may not be very involved in sports, and therefore be nervous about participating in them with your children. The idea would be to get the whole family involved and create a family-fun experience, instead of one where the dad felt pressured be the one playing catch with their children.  I think it’s important to take a family approach to health, and be there to support each other through the challenges of raising healthy kids. There will be many times when you feel nervous, unsure of your ability to help, fearful of the unknown and just plain foolish, but hey, isn’t’ that what parenting is all about?!

In the end, I believe  our job is to raise healthy, happy children who have the right framework for living a happy and healthy life. So choose wisely, and remember to move a little every day!

Michelle Obama has also publicly announced that she uses many of their own fresh frits and vegetables for preparing meals in the White House which she and her staff source from their own garden on the grounds.
While many of us have the ability (and luxury_ of planting our own gardens too, there are sadly many communities across the country which have few (and sometimes no) places to purchase groceries, much less fresh fruits and vegetables. Many members of these communities also struggle to be able to afford to plant and maintain their own gardens (if they even have the space to do so). These neighborhoods are known as ‘food deserts’, and in recent years, as economic difficulties caused grocery stores to shut their doors or consolidate locations, they are becoming more and more common. As Americans struggle to find work, many are forced to turn to inexpensive fast food to feed their families. Eliminating these food deserts and making sure parents in every part of the country have access to fresh produce and healthy choices is a primary goal of Let’s Move.
Below is an image from a recent event where Mrs. Obama highlights steps some mayors have taken to make healthy choices more available, from planting community gardens and bringing in fresh produce trucks, to easing the way for grocery chains to open in food deserts with zoning and permitting assistance, tax incentives and proactively seeking out grocery stores to serve as anchors in new development areas.

I’m personally very excited for the idea that local communities can have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and I’m encouraged by the Let’s Move movement.
